Radio Station
I have currently been tasked to pitch a documentary to a Radio Station. at this time, I don’t know what the idea is or what radio station it’s going to be for but depends on the target audience. When doing this I will need to consider the age, gender or interests. We know the following Radio Stations are:
- Radio 1
- Radio 2
- Radio 3
- Radio 4
- Radio 5
- Radio 6
- BBC Scotland
- Forth 1
- Six
We need to take in consideration what the Target Audience is going to be, as said before, not only that we need to take in consideration on many other factors such as health, safety and package content. A lot of this needs to be planned and researched.
What I will do is listen to each station to see what content they provided along with some of the other shows they have created. Depending what I find out depends on what choices I need to make when it comes to creating the documentary. For example the target audience is very vast depending on the Station.
An Example is age, Radio 1 Target Audience focuses between 15- 29 year olds whereas Radio 4 is for an older audience. Another thing is a Geographical factor BBC Scotland focuses just on the Scotland but Radio 2 focuses on the UK as a whole. Therefore I need to take in who the documentary is aimed at and what area it will be broadcasted for. Not only that, I need to know what Content is needed as well as for example I couldn’t broadcast a documentary about the latest night clubs in Edinburgh on Radio 2 as it`s focuses on just Scotland and the wrong target audience.
Therefore, I need to take a lot of things into consideration. I will be doing this by listening to each Station and have brief description of each stations target audience and content.
Package Content
The Documentary will be have to a minimum of 6 mins to maximum of 8 mins long. The Documentary needs to have at least 3 Interviews but could have more depending if I could fit more in the timeframe. It will then be broadcasted into a 1 hour live show. Research will be conducted in order find the story for the documentary which needs to be at least 3 ideas, further research will be done to expand on the story of the documentary. Once I have done the research it will be conducted into a pitch which will be shown through a PowerPoint along with me talking about the research and state who the interviewees are. Sound effects will be used depending what the story for the documentary is about.
Magazine Program
When put into groups we will be producing an informative talk show which will feature many documentaries and a live guest, it may feature some music but again it’s not a music show but we will see. The show will be as said before will be a 1 hour show which will be dividing to each individuals’ documentaries. A timeslot will be given to our live guest but we will need to see where they will fit into the schedule. The station style will be the style how we will present the show of the station. Depending what we have chosen the guest and the documentaries will be effect by this choice and the content I will be researching.
Group Workings and Planning.
As said, we will be working in groups when making this show. I don’t know how many people they will be in the group but I need to be aware that everyone needs to work together in order to make this work. We all need to have good communication between us this includes having regular meetings about the task and make decisions as group of how we can run the show. We need to keep in contact with each other to see how we are doing as we might have someone drop out, we need have Plan B just in case.
When it comes to Planning, I will be making Gannt Chart to keep track when things need to be handed in along with dates on carrying out tasks for each part of the production such as the research and interviews. I also aim to use the marking scheme as a check list just make sure I have done everything as a backup just in case I forget to do something.
I will also put in the meetings of the group in my chart as it helps not only me but the other people as well in my group as we can help each other out if someone is needing any help or what things we need to change in order to keep things on schedule.
Hardware and Software
For hardware I will be using a Zoom H4n recorder depending if I will be interviewing someone in person. I will also use the zoom if I need a skype interview along with the focus rite box and XLR cables in order to make it work. We will be using the Radio Studio for our hour-long program when it comes broadcasting our documentaries and interviewing the live guest along with producing the show.
Software I will be using will be Pro Tools to edit the documentary on. WordPress will be used in order to write up documents for the production along with my journal to keep track of my work.
Others
Health and Safety along with ethics will be brought into consideration when it comes to the documentaries as I don’t know what the documentary will be about yet but it’s important to still consider the ethics and health safety. Interviewees safety will be considered through release forms and risk assessments to assess the locations safety. We should be able to cover this when making the 1 hour magazine program e.g not tripping over things in the studio and the use of equipment.
I will need to cover the ethics of broadcasting and recording for the documentary, i will do this through by looking at the code of conduct of Ofcom and BECTU. I will also look the Code of Conducts from different Broadcasters such as the BBC. we need to do this to make sure we are being ethical when creating the Graded Unit.
Legality will be covered through by me which will involve me looking into the different acts such as the main ones like Defamation 2013 and Copyright 1998. As said before each interviewee needs to sign a release form which gives there permission to be used in the GU unless they change their mind. we need to make sure to look the laws of what we are allowed to say as presenters as we don`t want to cause any accidental or purposeful defamation. when it comes to music for the station or sound we need to look into different station licences to see what is allowed which would depend on the M.C.Ps and P.R.S Licences are.
